Campaign for Coastal Defence

North Solent Shoreline Management Plan (SMP)

The North Solent SMP public consultation kicked off on 1st February. It lasts for 3 months. You have a chance to make your views known.

The SMP is a “higher level” coastal plan for the coastline from Selsey Bill to Hurst Spit. Normally, the SMP would be done before the detailed plans for particular stretches of coastline. In our case, though, our detailed coastal plan (the Pagham to East Head Coastal Defence Strategy) has been prepared in advance of the SMP.

This means the SMP largely follows what’s in our Coastal Defence Strategy. There are some differences, though, and we will be quizzing the SMP team about these, particularly if they appear to be significant.  We will follow up any of these in our formal response to the public consultation.

There is an SMP public exhibition at the Chichester District Council offices (East Pallant House, Chichester) on Thursday 11th February (2-7pm). You can also view the SMP at
